I have had a lifetime career in horticulture – as a professional gardener, garden broadcaster, and finally academic – teaching the subject I love for 25 years at NSAC and then Dalhousie. The nursery is my return to my roots, growing plants I’ve wanted but couldn’t find. I believe in selling younger plants that are better able to adapt to a new environment because I want people to succeed in their gardening endeavors. It also means I can sell them for less than if I had grown and cared for them for several more years. This is important to me because I want everyone to be able to afford a special plant, whether it is a tree to mark a birth event or a perennial that makes them feel that sense of satisfaction that comes from planting something lovely in their garden.
At Beneath the Boughs Nursery I specialize in native plants and shade plants, especially unusual or hard to find species. This year I have expanded to include plants for pollinators.
